Supported NM Projects
New Mexico Space Grant Consortium has supported various projects since its creation in 1989. Below you will find a few of them outlined.
Apollo Student Challenge
New Mexico middle school and high school students participated in the Apollo Student Challenge to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11 on the surface of the moon.

NASA Technology Infusion Road Tour
New Mexico Space Grant Consortium collaborated with NASA Office of STEM Engagement to host the NASA Technology Infusion Road Tour at NMSU.

International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight
ISPCS was an annual space conference that captured the growth and diversification of the commercial space industry in powerful talks.

Eclipse Ballooning Project
A team of students and staff from NMSGC at New Mexico State University launched a high-altitude balloon on 2017 as part of a nationwide, NASA-sponsored project to live-stream aerial video footage of the “Great American Eclipse.”

Student Launch Program
In 2017, NMSGC sponsored its last student launch project where students and teachers watched as their experiments were launched at the FLARE Alamogordo Launch Site in Alamogordo, NM.

Lunar Legacy
In 2000, the two graduate students spent the summer at Johnson Space Center, Smithsonian and other archives investigating records to catalog and map Tranquility Base. The remoteness of the moon preserves the artifacts for now. The list of 106 artifacts is one of the most extensive that NASA has of the site, it

International Council on Monuments and Sites
ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, is a non-governmental organisation working to conserve and protect cultural heritage sites around the world.

Build the Moon Challenge
The Build the Moon Challenge invites middle and high school teams to dive into authentic aerospace research. Students will get hands-on with real lunar regolith simulant to formulate their own building materials, design a lunar habitat, and put their engineering skills to the test.
Whether you lead a classroom, a homeschool network, an afterschool club, or any other formal or informal learning group—your team is invited to take on the mission.

AIAA SciTech 2027 Course on Fluid-Filled Porous Composites for Space Applications
The course, "Fluid-Filled Porous Composites: Multifunctional Design for Space Applications," will be offered as a full-day short course at the AIAA SciTech Forum 2027 in Orlando on January 10, 2027. The course is based on research from the NASA EPSCoR AQUASHIELD project and will be co-instructed by Dr. Ashok K. Ghosh of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and Dr. Yu-Lin Shen of the University of New Mexico.
Fluid-Filled Porous Composites are bio-inspired structures designed to integrate multiple spacecraft functions, including radiation shielding, micrometeoroid protection, thermal management, and water storage, into a single lightweight system. The course will cover the biological inspiration, design principles, additive manufacturing approaches, computational modeling, and potential aerospace applications of this emerging technology.
